More than 114 million US consumers downloaded news apps for the first time in 2020. According to a recent briefing from eMarketer, that growth represents an increase of 15% over 2019, a much larger rate of growth than predicted. Much of this growth has been driven in response to the current health crisis as consumers searched for information regarding the pandemic.
This dramatic increase in usage of news apps is expected to decline in 2021, with eMarketer estimating users to fall to 109.9 million.
Regardless, that number is still significantly higher than the earlier estimate of 106.8 million users made a year ago, proving that mobile apps continue to be an integral part of consumer lives.
Unfortunately, as our reliance on mobile apps continues to grow across all categories, from information to entertainment to shopping, bad actors have adapted their tactics to take advantage of this increasingly vital channel. As a result, brands must remain hyper-vigilant for any instances of abuse of their intellectual property in mobile apps and mobile app stores.
