With the pandemic permeating every aspect of our daily lives, it’s no question holiday shopping in 2020 will be unlike any other year. Many brick and mortar stores are foregoing the traditional Black Friday in-person shopping experience and are starting their holiday promotions early -- and online, giving shoppers an extended period of time to secure holiday deals.
With this shift in both retailer’s offers and consumer shopping habits, eMarketer is predicting e-commerce sales to make up an estimated 18.8% of all holiday retail sales, worth over $190.47 billion.
The US Cyber Five days, the five days that start on Thanksgiving and end on Cyber Monday, are all expected to be bigger than last year, with Cyber Monday predicted to be the biggest online spending day in US history. Sales on Cyber Monday are anticipated to hit $12.89 billion, an increase of 38.3% from last year.
.
This prediction aligns with the current trend of consumers preferring to shop from the safety of their own homes. According to a survey conducted by Criteo in September of this year, 64% of US adults reported feeling more comfortable shopping online.
Even with the uncertain circumstances brought by 2020, consumers are looking to make this holiday season one to remember. US retail sales for the November-December holiday period are anticipated to reach $1.013 trillion, an increase of 0.9% over last year, and the second-ever season to break the $1 trillion mark.
