E-commerce Explodes as Consumer Habits Continue to Shift

Without a question, the current coronavirus pandemic has forced massive changes to how both consumers and brands approach shopping and retail. From interruptions in supply chains to massive shifts in consumer demand and the unprecedented need for e-commerce options, the retail landscape has dramatically changed in just the last six months alone.

eMarketer reports that COVID-19 will have long term effects on total US retail sales, predicting a surge of 18.0% for e-commerce sales. Conversely, brick-and-mortar retail sales are expected to decline by 14% to $4.184 trillion. This shift in consumer behavior will push e-commerce to an all-time high of 14.5% of all total retail sales in 2020.

This trend is having a profound effect on various categories, too.  Books, music and video will be the most penetrated category for e-commerce this year at 62.7%, the first retail category to become an e-commerce majority.

As we noted in a recent blog post, the percentage of US consumers who bought food and beverages online jumped from 27% in February of 2020 to 40% in June.

With more consumers turning to e-commerce, it’s essential to ensure the authenticity of your products and customer interactions in digital channels. In order to guarantee this authenticity, brands need to be able to quickly identify the misuse of their company trademarks, logos, and brands.
